Time, Talents & Treasure
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21 ESV)
You are a treasure created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27) for a specific plan and purpose. Do you believe that? If so, every new day is an opportunity to let your actions reflect your belief. Each of us has been given a finite amount of time here on earth to use our talents and treasure to point others to Jesus and to bring glory to God the Father.
Time is a gift. Time with family and friends. Time to work and time to play. Time to be joyful and time to grieve. But what does how we spend our time on earth say about our hearts? Looking closer at our calendars reveals more clearly what we value and what is most important to us. Ask the Lord how He might want you to spend today, this week, and this month. Let Him fill your calendar with opportunities to partner with Him where He is at work in your home, your neighborhood, and your workplace.
God wired you and me with a unique set of talents, unlike anyone else on this planet. Let that sink in for a minute! Maybe you have been given a skill that is more likely to be on display, like playing a sport that is followed by millions of fans, using your voice to sing in a way that captivates a nation, or leading in a way that galvanizes a large organization to great success. Perhaps your talents are more subtle and likely to fly under the radar, like your compassion for the homeless in your community, your ability to write letters to those who are sick in the hospital, or the way you smile at every person that walks by - affectively saying to them “YOU MATTER.” Today, take some time to let God show you each of the unique talents He birthed in you. Consider how you might reorient your calendar and priorities to make room for your exceptional talents to be on full display, pointing people to Jesus.
Treasure, some people are given a lot, and some people are given a little. The more treasure God has asked you to steward, the more likely you have heard the following two lies from Satan ringing in your ears. You are the author and creator of this treasure. I worked hard for this money, so it’s mine to do what I want with, right? How do we fight Satan’s lies - with God’s truth. Deuteronomy 8 reminds us of the truth about where our treasure comes from, “Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’ You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day. And if you forget the Lord your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I solemnly warn you today that you shall surely perish.” (Deuteronomy 8:17-19)
Flip the script. Consider the idea of treasure from the viewpoint of those who have been given only “a little.” Their voices sound something like this - I am the lowest of the low. Time is not promised to me. My talent will likely go unrealized. Gathering treasure is not even on my radar. Come close, oh man or woman who has been given much. Reach out your hand. What do you feel? That is the outstretched hand of a child created in the image of God that needs your help. We don’t need a handout. We need someone to bend down and offer us a hand up - sharing their God-given time, talents, and treasure. No judgment. No guilt. Seriously. But for those of us whom God has given an abundance of treasure, we need to take a hard look at where we are investing it - on earth or in heaven?
