Our Role in the Process of Spiritual Transformation

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit.” 2 Corinthians‬ ‭3:17-18‬ ‭NRSV‬‬

Transformation comes from the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. We can not engineer or manufacture spiritual transformation. Spiritual transformation is not just another task on our to-do list that we can race forward to complete. On our own, we are often blind to the areas of our lives that need change the most. What, then, is our role in the process of spiritual transformation?

Our role is more straightforward than we often think.

It is to daily posture our lives in the presence of God. To sit alone in silence with our Lord, wholly surrendered to His will, waiting for Him to speak. And He will speak, but it will be in His timing and His way. We must resist the temptation to evaluate our time spent in His presence according to whether or not we hear him speak. His presence is not dependent on Him speaking.

Spiritual transformation, or the process of becoming like Jesus for the sake of others, is the overflow of our days, weeks, and months spent in His presence. If you and I want to become like Jesus, we must first commit our lives to being with Jesus. There really is no shortcut.
