A Filter For Our Tongue

"From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this ought not to be so." James‬ ‭3:10‬ ‭NRSV‬‬

Every morning I come downstairs, turn on the kitchen light, and start the process of making my daily coffee. Add water. Then the filter. Finally, just the right amount of coffee grounds. All set. Time for the slow process of the hot water pouring over the coffee grounds in order to produce a fresh, hot pot of coffee. All of the steps in the process are important, but without the filter, you end up with a pot of hot coffee grounds.

Like a coffee filter, when we practice the spiritual discipline of silence, the Holy Spirit creates distance between the never-ending flow of words coming from our hearts and heading toward our mouths. This distance allows us the necessary time to filter out so many of the words that we mean for cursing instead of blessing.

This week carve out a few minutes to just sit in silence. And then, when you go from that place, let the Holy Spirit be your filter throughout the day—helping you refrain from saying words that are probably better left unspoken.
