What is Distracting You From the Presence of God?

"Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words." Romans‬ ‭8:26‬ ‭NRSV‬‬

It was early in the morning, and I was sitting alone in a moment of silence before the Lord. Often in solitude, I like to light a small candle to symbolize the presence of God. As I sat in the darkness, my attention was drawn to the candle's flame, which seemed dim and less prominent than normal. And that's when I saw it. The jar that held the candle was turned so that the label was directly between me and the brilliance of the candle's flame. With just two small turns of the jar, the label was removed from my vision, revealing what had been there all along - a magnificent flame dancing wildly above the melting candle wax.

So what does this simple but significant illustration mean for you and me?

Is it possible that the flame of the Holy Spirit that once burned bright in your life has grown dim over time? Perhaps like the label that was blocking my view, you have allowed something "good" to distract you from the presence of God.

Today, ask God to help you identify and reprioritize or remove that distraction. Perhaps it is too much of a good thing - like family, friends, work, education, or entertainment.
