The Trap of Comparison

“Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven;.” Luke‬ ‭6:37‬ ‭NRSV

Cleanse and forgive us, O Lord, of our judgmental spirit. When we allow our hearts to become critical, we seek to elevate our greatness by tearing down others’ work. In isolation, a critical spirit gives birth to comparison. Comparison then begins to grow as we fall into self-doubt and self-rejection. In our fallen state, we fail to remember and trust that we have been reconciled to God by Jesus’s finished work on the cross and his resurrection from the dead. We fail to remember that we have been forgiven and are a new creation in Christ. As a new creation, there is no need for comparison that leads to division. We are free to contribute and minister to others through love that seeks to advance the Kingdom of Heaven. As this love grows, we are empowered to step out into the world as messengers of reconciliation.

Today take time to wrestle with the following questions. Where have you allowed seeds of judgment to grow in your heart? Have you fallen into the trap of comparison that leads to division? In your comparison, have you mistakenly labeled others, failing to see them the way Christ sees them?
