Re-practicing Spiritual Disciplines
"Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you." Philippians 4:9 NRSV
It was a beautiful winter day. The sun was shining, and looking out the window, it appeared warmer than it was. My son and I spontaneously decided to move our football game from inside to outside.
As we were throwing the football, he said, "Dad, I used to be able to throw a tight spiral a few years ago, but now I can't." It hit me that he had once learned to throw a tight spiral, but his skills had faded due to lack of practice. I said to him, "You learned it before because you practiced, and now you can't because you haven't been practicing. You can learn it again; you just need to re-practice." After about five minutes, he was throwing a nice spiral again.
Similarly, Paul's encouragement to the church at Philippi is to keep practicing what they had learned from him.
Here’s a thought. Are there any spiritual disciplines like prayer, Bible study, or celebration that you used to practice but are no longer in the habit of, and now they feel uncomfortable?
Start again today! You can re-practice these disciplines like you can re-practice the skill of throwing a football.
